Writing Dark Fiction for Teens Isn't About Easy Lessons

I am the author of dark mysteries and thrillers for young adults. I'm also the parent of three teenagers. That's a dark journey in itself.

Though I do not have any tattoos (yet) I have a fascination with them, with the medium and with the significance they have to their owners, particularly how external influences help carve our identities. This perspective became the bedrock of my dark YA mystery series, where characters grapple with loss, secrets and self-discovery.

These novels explore the conflict between who we are within and the marks the world and those around us leave upon us, both beautiful and ugly.

Teen readers deserve stories that reflect the complex, shadowed identities they navigate. Not easy lessons, but honest lanterns in the dark.
